Saturday December 29, 2007 we sneak out of Botany Bay and find
conditions at the Kelloe to be fairly calm at the surface. We
anchored in out usual spot which puts us 10m to the right of the wreck
as you look at the boiler towards the bow. And that's exactly
where the anchor was. On the way down the water was very dirty and at
the bottom, while reasonably clear it was gloomy from the sediment in
the 50m of water above. At 50m you don't get a lot of
time, even on Nitrox. We headed across the boiler to the anchor,
then out to where the bow would have been. From there we angled
back towards the boiler, noting that there is little recognizable from
the engine. A quick look down the ribbing and we were at our agreed 15
mins deco on our computers. So, put enough air in the left bag to
bring the anchor up from the bottom and to ensure that chain attached to
anchor was free from the bottom and up we go. A long deco stop but
finally we are finished at climb back into the boat. We do this
dive on 12L steel tanks and pony each. We have a tank with 2
second stages on the deco bar which we can use if short of air.
during our deco stop we drifted around 180m south of the wreck.
This was expected but what we did not expect was that the anchor would
catch. We managed to get it free by driving the boat N but when we
recovered it one of the prongs was badly bent. This means that it
was well and truly hooked into something that was at least 5m above the
sandy bottom. Next time we are in the area we will definitely be
exploring this area a bit more. The mystery with the Kelloe is why is there so little fish life - esp compared to the other wrecks in the area which are fish havens. |
