We arrived a bit late due to a passenger from KL arriving late. Our little Corolla was waiting for us and it didn't take long to find The Hotel Cairns where we would spend 3 nights before boarding Spoilsport. Our first afternoon we walked around the town, checking out the Marina and CBD and collected a heap of brochures to plan our next few days. Dinner was at the RSL. Good meals, I had the roast and Jen had salt & pepper squid. Both very good and very well priced. Tuesday 12th May, after a big breakfast we drove out to Cairn Central to get some bathers for Jen and board shorts for me. The lady at Splish Splash was very helpful. Once done with the essential shopping we drove north, finding ourselves heading up toward Kuranda. First stop was a look out. Very nice views.
On the way up we visited Barron Gorge. Even in the dry this is very impressive.
Close by is Wright's lookout with views back through a steep valley to Cairns. On to Kuranda where we had a coffee at the pub and a walk along the train station platform. The butterfly enclosure at Kuranda is well worth the visit. It is full of wonderfully coloured butterflies including the very large Ulysses. We spent quite a bit of time here and enjoyed it immensely. Sadly, I don't have the camera lens to get the best pics.
Then we drove on through Mareeba and the long way home down the Gillies. It was a great first day.
