The Olgas - Shellharbour |
|
We had decided to head down to Shellharbour to dive on the 24th of July 2010. Wayne had read about the Olgas on Michael McFadyen's website (click here to go there). It sounded interesting. The day started wrong though. Wayne backed the trailer down to the boat ramp, but due to another boat in the way I had to drive the boat off. That was fine, I backed away, and nosed back in against wharf. Leaving the motor running but out of gear I moved forward, grabbed the rope and climbed up onto the wharf, preparing to tie the boat up. However, to my dismay, the loop of the rope attached to the boat came off, leaving the boat drifting away. The little harbour was unusually surgy and the boat drifted away toward the rocks. I decided I would have to swim after it so started to finish getting into my dry suit. Just at that time the boat swung back and another boatie was able to tie my rope around the hand rail. Wayne was oblivious to this as he was parking the trailer. We headed out to The Olgas, about 4km south of Bass Point. First time our marks showed nothing but after a bit of cruising around we found the site on the bottom finder. At the bottom we were anchored amongst large boulders, up to 5m tall rising from the sandy bottom. Viz was not good at around 5m. The terrain was interesting but there was not a lot of fish life and soft corals and plants were not that interesting. There were schools of bullseye and a groper or two. We decided to lift the anchor on the lift bag and drift with the boat. This way we would get an idea of the rest of the area. After drifting for about 10 mins and seeing nothing exciting we headed up.
