After the excitement of the Bombo on September 16, 2006 we headed over to Pig Island. We wanted to dive the North side which we had enjoyed previously. That side was full of small fishing boats so we headed around to the south side. The bottom looked a bit interesting se we dropped over, expecting a pretty ordinary dive. Were we ever mistaken. There are literally fish everywhere - huge schools of bullseye and yellowtail. Within a minute of being there a large bull ray swam towards me, The pic below was taken with a wide angle lens - it was very close. We saw it again 2 more times. The schools of yellowtail were just massive. The area starts shallow at 7m with kelp and stripes and then drops off to many boulders down to 22m or so at the sand. We didn't venture more than 50m from the anchor and saw more life here than we have seen at any site in Sydney. Moray eels and cuttles and what we think is a potato cod - strangely out of place in these cold waters. This is a must do dive again and again. The Port Kembla area is a well kept secret. These islands are superb. |
