We've dive Pig Island several times now and it does not disappoint at
all. It is extensive and you can spend your dive time there at any
depth you choose from 10m down to around 24m on the sand. Fish
life again was prolific with groper, kingfish, bullseye, yellowtail, to
name a few. We came across a cuttle at the start of the dive and a
bull ray later in the dive. The potato cod that we had seen here
before was no where to be found. Hopefully he had not been caught.
United Divers had a boat load of divers here when we pulled up.
Viz was great the water being very clear. We explored a bit
further North than previously and in this area are trenches that you can
swim down and thousands of colourful sea tulips. My 54 minutes
here seemed to end too quickly.
On returning to the boat Wayne had stayed down to make sure the anchor
did not recatch. Once free the boat was pushed closer the the
rocks on the island. Fearing being washed up into the rocks I
tried to start the engine to move us slowly out. It would not even
turn over and it took a few frantic minutes before I got it to turn over
and start. I had to drag Wayne who was on the back anchor at 6m
away. The boat was within metres of where the sea falls down
before sweeping up onto the rocks. At this site it pays to anchor
a bit further away from the island to allow the anchors to be recovered
while keeping a safe distance away.
A great way to finish 2006 - 101 dives for the year and 289 all up for
me!! |
