We had wanted to dive the Bombo but the big ships
prevented us so off to Pig Island. Our favourite part of this
island is on the S end but the seas were rolling in due to the winds so
we decided to check out the North side which we had not done before.
Well as we headed around the SE end of the island we spied whales coming
in our direction. We slowed and allowed them to get close.
They kept coming and we realised that it was a mother and calf humpback.
The calf breached several times. It was just awesome. Once
they came past us we followed slowly until the disappeared, submerging
to go around the island. Sadly, the boat was pitching too much to
get any decent pics. The viz was great and we were rewarded.
Juvenile PJs, schools of bullseye, stingarees. But the highlight
was at the start of the dive. While photographing a PJ I spied a
mourning cuttle beside the PJ. As I photographed it I saw that
underneath it, following it's very movement was a very small cutttle.
Uou can see this in the pics. WOW!! I have never seen this
behaviour before. While the fish life her is not as prolific as
the S side it is still a great dive site. This was my first dive
with my Black Diamond BCD. I bought it on e-bay. it's an
older one with the velcro weight pockets. It performed flawlessly,
lots of strong D rings and 3 useful pockets. It is very
comfortable in the water and has awesome lift capabilities, being
designed to take twins with an adapter. It is also very responsive
being rear inflation. |
