We've dive Pig Island several times now and it does not disappoint at
all. We are quite familiar with the SE end of the island where
there are thousands of fish and big rock formations but further around
the island to the NW we had not been. We anchored in relatively
shallow water at 15m with great viz. There is less fish life here
but really great sea tulips, soft corals and other aquatic life. A
sea dragon at 20m was a surprise - we don't normally see them this deep.
There were plenty of cuttles, rock cods, bulleye, kingfish and
yellowtail to name just a few. We did find an old admiralty anchor
in very good condition. And heading back towards the area of Pig
Island that we know better we found our friend the potato cod. Our
last dive here late December we could not find him and feared he had
become food for a fisher. On a fine day there are many fishers in
this area. We enjoyed just over an hour on 37% Nitrox at a max
depth of 26.2m.
This was also my first dive with a new arm for my strobe. My old
arm was Loc-line and about 180mm long. The strobe was too close to
the camera and I suffered a lot of back scatter. Having purchased
4 segments of Loc-line (one segment is a bit under 150mm long) from
Gasweld at Taren Point for under $50 I made a new arm with 3 segments.
This arm is quite long and allows the strobe to be positioned well away
from the camera, virtually eliminating back scatter. Below are the
first results |
