Our second dive for the day while Jenny is completing her open water at Plunge. After diving the Royal Shepherd we headed over to old mans hat but the swell was roaring in and we headed for more sheltered waters on the East side of North Head at Blue Fish. We have dived here before and we found an anchor point just out from a lovely little water fall in the cliffs. The swell was up but it was long and there was no wind. We dived along the wall, finding little of real interest. Some fish around leatherjackets and yellowtail. We hit deco in what seemed to be no time at all. We were penalised, Wayne worse than me. The surface looked rough and we agreed that I should return to the boat and motor slowly out away from the cliffs. That was fine until the boat was thrown around the seas which were being whipped up by an ever increasingly heavy storm. The mermaid line, which I had left out in case Wayne had surfaced away from the boat wrapped itself around the prop and so we started towards the rocks, being driven by the wind. It was that strong I could not hear whether the engine was running or not. I decided to put the back anchor out to hold the boat. this worked by we were stern to the storm. In hindsight I should have tied that anchor up to the front of the boat. Eventually Wayne surfaced and then had to spend a harrowing few minutes cutting the mermaid line from the prop. We got it all together in the end and motored back to Chowder Bay through the driving storm, the rain stinging our faces.
