Wedding Cake Isl 01-07-06

Saturday July 2006 and we have had a great dive at Minmi Trench. A Surface Interval on Long Bay beach (and pit stop at the toilets there) in the sun was most enjoyable. We headed back out and north to Wedding Cake Island, opposite Coogee beach. It took us 3 goes to get the anchors to catch but finally they did on the ocean side of the island about 50m out. In the process we had seen steep drop offs on the bottom finder and were getting quite excited about what we would find. The scenery here comprises lots of walls dropping from 10m deep to 20m. Further out the bottom is over 20m and sandy. Lots of fish life here as well. Friendly groper, schooling fish, mowong, all the usual critters. It was the walls that we enjoyed the most, much like shark point. This is a must dive site for any one with a boat. I had a max depth of 20.7m and a dive time of 59 mins. A must do again dive but due to it's exposure - only in calm conditions.
