Sunday 13th December 2009 was a fine sunny but windy
day. Jenny and I went to Bare Island late in the afternoon.
Diving on an incoming tide we expected reasonable conditions. We
dived the west side, following the reef. The water was milky, with
viz about 4m. There was a disturbing lack of fish life. We
dived as far as sea horse rock and saw a couple of stingaree, a couple
of flathead and a few goatfish. No groper, no stripeys.
There was a highlight though. On sea horse rock I
saw a red Indian fish - a very healthy specimen as well.
Some have the opinion that the dredging in the Bay is
affecting Bare Island. I think that if this dive is typical then it
would suggest that dredging is definitely having an adverse affect.
This was my 100th dive for 2009.
