The bommie on the back of Bare Island had fascinated me for some
time. Often we would see the seas crashing over the bommie at low tide.
Given there was not a lot of choice we decided to anchor on the bommie.
The bommie is quite large - we didn't actually fully circumnavigate it. We
headed North from our anchor point, soon hitting the sand line. We
followed the sand line at 12m to the West for a while before rising above the
rocks into shallower water at 6-8m. The top of the bommie has nice swim
throughs and rock ledges and shelves. There was lots of fish life in
places, and lots of abandoned anchors. We recovered one from the bottom
with good chain. We dived for 65 mins. We used a bit of air
recovering the anchor as we struggled to tie it up and stay in place against a
reasonably strong surge. This is worth a lot more exploring. It's
interesting that the best diving around Bare Island is to the South but most
divers go East or West. The bommie is definitely worth exploring further. |
